What is laminated timber?

Glued laminated timber (abbreviated BS-wood or glulam) is an industrially manufactured product for supporting structures. Laminated timber consists of at least three dried boards or softwood laminations that are bonded together parallel to the fibre. It is due to the strength grading of the starting material and the homogenization, tempered by the layered structure, that it has up to 80% higher load bearing capacity than usual timber.
Due to its manufacturing process BS-wood is dimensionally stable and to a large extend crack-resistant building material.

In addition to simple straight components variable cross sectional shapes and/or a simple curvature are customary. Double curved and twisted components are also possible.
